The party spends the winter with Holgast in his tower, foraging for food, learning new magic and finding wisdom. As spring approaches, they prepare to leave. Holgast informs them that they will need to eliminate “the watchers” before they depart – the harpy creatures which continually are in sight of the tower.
Eluding the watcher’s view, they find the lair. Entering it, the discover signs of a long (and disgusting) inhabitation. The four kill the harpies and strike down their leader, a NightSister named Marayle. This last disappears into a cloud of raven feathers.
Their journey is an arduous one and circuitous, avoiding signs of the Bloodspears. Finally, they come to the Inn of the Silver Horse, where they rest and relax within civilization and get word of Fallcrest and happenings in the Vale.
They also meet Marinia Ravenholm, a member of the clan of assassins reputed to have killed Faren Marklehay. She dispels that mystery, citing that Lord Marklehay was one of their best customers.
The party sets out for Fallcrest in the company of Prior Kholm, a mendicant traveling in that direction, in hopes of arriving unannounced.
